The study programme represents the continuation of the  undergraduate study programme of the 1st Cycle Primary school Teaching, since according to the provisions of the “Act on the organisation and financing of education” (ZOFVI) for the profession of primary school teacher the 2nd Cycle education is required. The envisaged quality of learning outcomes and competencies ensures employability of graduates, as they are aligned with learning outcomes and competencies that are required by the law for the profession for which the study programme provides education.
Graduates can continue their studies on the 3rd Cycle or they may continue it on the study programmes of the 2nd Cycle which in details analyse particular specificities within the profession (e.g., the UP PEF study program Inclusive Pedagogics).

 

General competencies of graduates: 

a) Communication and relationships

  • efficient communication with children, pupils, students and other education participants (hereinafter: pupils), development of positive team atmosphere and good relations with pupils and among pupils themselves,
  • development of pupils’ linguistic communication skills,
  • development of pupils’ social competencies,
  • creation of safe and encouraging learning environment where pupils feel accepted, where differences are respected and where independence and responsibility  are provided,
  • establishment of clear rules in connection with the course of instruction and conducting of teaching process, organisation of work in the class and for the class as well as effective leadership and coordination of department teachers’ assembly,
  • knowing and implementing different strategies for the encouragement of the behaviour where zero tolerance for violence is clearly visible, where conflicts are solved with mediation and the integrity of process participants is safeguarded,
  • demonstration of positive relation to pupils, while understanding and respecting pupils’ social, cultural, linguistic and religious background, and other personal circumstances,
  • awareness of ethic dimensions of one’s actions and their respect,
  • e-competencies,
  • didactic knowledge and interpretation capabilities for teaching and researching in multi-imagery educational environments including logic and effective use of ICT in teaching process as well as understanding the impact of media technologies on subject teaching areas.


b) Effective teaching and education

  • mastering basic principles and procedures of planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching process,
  • taking into account the development characteristics and individual differences between pupils while encouraging successful learning,
  • individualisation and differentiation of educational work,
  • establishing optimal learning environment by using different teaching methods and strategies  which encourage mental activities of pupils and adequate objective planning, testing and assessment,
  • developing pupils’ abilities for lifelong learning with strategies for independent learning,
  • application of information-communication technology and development of pupils’ information literacy,
  • recognising pupils with special needs and adjustments of work to their needs in cooperation with other teachers,
  • adequate application of various ways of follow-up and testing pupils’ advancement in line with objectives and feedback information.


c) Cooperation with working and social environment (with society and within society)

  • with other schools’ employees, other schools and institutions as well as education area experts,
  • with parents and other persons, responsible for pupils,
  • entering into partnership relations with other schools, institutions in the school environment as well as with experts in educational area at the local, regional, national, European and wider global level.


d) Skills for professional development

  • capability of critical consideration about one’s own work and its evaluation,
  • improving quality of one’s work through self-evaluation and further education and training,
  • qualification for constructive cooperation in development and research projects dedicated to the improvement of educational work.


e) Organisational and leadership capabilities while

  • knowing well one’s own profession and rules that regulate schools functioning,
  • successful planning and time managing,
  • mastering organisational and administrative tasks in connection with planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluating the teaching process,
  • effective leading of pupils,
  • capability of team work and effective problem solving.

 

Subject-specific competencies of graduates

Specific subject competencies acquired by the programme are as follows:

  • the ability of creating adjustments and assistance for children with special needs in the educational process,
  • awareness of the importance of research as a tool for professional development of educational worker and innovation of practice,
  • competencies of independent research work,
  • ability of synthetic demonstration of research problems,
  • ability of meaningful and effective creation of adequate preparation for the selected theme , its implementation and its evaluation,
  • ability of developing reflective approach to educational work.


Other subject specific competencies acquired through the programme are indicated in the subject curricula, included in the study programme.

In case of limited entry candidates are selected on the basis of the success in their previous studies (average score, diploma work grade).

The study programme does not envisage any conditions for advancement since it covers only one academic year.

Access requirements:

The first year of the postgraduate second cycle master’s study programme Primary school Teaching can be entered by a candidate who has completed a:

-      study programme of the first cycle adopted after 11 June 2004, in the amount of 240 ECPS from adequate professional fields, i.e., fields that belong to the area ISCED 14 (Educational sciences and education of teachers), study programme Primary school Teaching;

-      study programme of the first cycle adopted after 11 June 2004, in the amount of 240 ECPS from adequate professional fields, i.e., fields that belong to the area ISCED 14 (Educational sciences and education of teachers), if the candidate completed all study obligations that are essential for the continuation of the studies; those obligations are determined according to the differences of professional fields and cover from 10 up to maximum 60 credit points, and the candidate may complete them during his/hers studies on the first cycle, within the supplementary study programmes or by passing exams before entering the master’s study programme;

-      study programme of the first cycle adopted after 11 June 2004, in the amount of 240 ECPS from other professional fields, if the candidate completed all study obligations that are essential for the continuation of the studies; those obligations are determined according to the differences of professional fields and cover from 10 up to maximum 60 credit points, and the candidate may complete them during his/hers studies on the first cycle, within the supplementary study programmes or by passing exams before entering the master’s study programme; the candidate also has to demonstrate his/hers previously acquired knowledge and competences from the subjects of basic educational studies and from the area of primary school teaching subjects: Slovenian language, mathematics, social sciences, natural sciences, music, artistic and physical education;

-      study programme of the first cycle adopted after 11 June 2004, in the amount of 180 ECPS from adequate professional fields, i.e., fields that belong to the area ISCED 14 (Educational sciences and education of teachers), the study programme of Pre-school education and has successfully completed the additional year which is an integral part of this study programme and has thus collected the missing 60 ECPS;

-      study programme of the first cycle adopted after 11 June 2004, in the amount of 180 ECPS from adequate professional fields, i.e., fields that belong to the area ISCED 14 (Educational sciences and education of teachers), if he/she has completed prior to enrolment the study obligations  that are essential for the continuation of studies; those obligations are determined according to the differences of professional fields and cover from 10 up to maximum 60 credit points, and the candidate may complete them during his/hers studies on the first cycle, within the supplementary study programmes or by passing exams before entering the master’s study programme; the candidate must prior to enrolment successfully complete the additional year of the programme which is an integral part of the study programme and thus collect the missing 60 ECPS;

-      higher education professional study programme, adopted before 11 June 2004, from adequate professional fields, i.e., fields that belong to the area ISCED 14 (Educational sciences and education of teachers), the study programme of Pre-school education and has successfully completed the additional year which is an integral part of this study programme;

-      higher education professional study programme, adopted before 11 June 2004, from adequate professional fields, i.e., fields that belong to the area ISCED 14 (Educational sciences and education of teachers), if he/she has completed prior to enrolment the study obligations that are essential for the continuation of studies; those obligations are determined according to the differences of professional fields and cover from 10 up to maximum 60 credit points, and the candidate may complete them during his/hers studies on the first cycle, within the supplementary study programmes or by passing exams before entering the master’s study programme; the candidate must prior to enrolment successfully complete the additional year of the programme which is an integral part of this study programme;

-      higher education professional study programme, adopted before 11 June 2004 from other professional fields, if the candidate has completed prior to enrolment the study obligations that are essential for the continuation of studies; those obligations are determined according to the differences of professional fields and cover from 10 up to maximum 60 credit points, and the candidate may complete them during his/hers studies on the first cycle, within the supplementary study programmes or by passing exams before entering the master’s study programme; the candidate also has to demonstrate his/her previously acquired knowledge and competencies from the subjects of basic educational studies and from the area of primary school teaching subjects: Slovenian language, mathematics, social sciences, natural sciences, music, artistic and physical education; the candidate must prior to enrolment successfully complete the additional year of the programme which is an integral part of this study programme;

-      equal level of education from abroad.

 The study programme has three fields/options, i.e., Primary school Teaching, Primary school Teaching with English Language and Primary school Teaching with Italian Language.

In case a candidate selects one of the language fileds/options, he/she has to dispose of previously acquired foreign language competences and 30 ECPS from the chosen language option, acquired within the elective subjects at the undergraduate studies of the first cycle; those subjects are as follows:

 -      for Primary school Teaching with English Language:

Language competences in English (6 ECPS),

Oral and written communication in English (6 ECPS),

English as the language of profession (6 ECPS),

Child and juvenile literature in English (6 ECPS),

Social dimensions of English (3 ECPS) and 3 ECPS from teaching practice;

 -      for Primary school Teaching with Italian Language:

Modern Italian language 1 (6 ECPS),

Modern Italian language 2 (6 ECPS),

Italian grammar - morphology and sytax (6 ECPS),

Italian literature - Modern literature and literature at the border (6 ECPS),

Oral and written communication (Italian) (3 ECPS) and 3 ECPS within the teaching practice.

 

Candidates can confirm their language knowledge at the level of B2 according to Joint European Linguistic Framework by the accomplished Maturity Exam at the higher level from the language subject or by submitting public certificate attainable at the appropriate institution. In case of submission of public certificate issued by foreign institution a responsible commission of the UP PEF verifies the comparability and the validity of the results provided in the certificate.

 

In case of limited entry candidates are selected on the basis of the success in their previous studies (average score, diploma work grade).  

 

Promotion to next grade:

The study programme does not envisage any conditions for advancement since it covers only one academic year.  

 

Concluding the studies:

Successfully completed study requirements and successful defence of Master’s Thesis.

 

Enrolment according to criteria for transfer:

Transfer regulations are provided by the “Criteria for transfers between study programmes” (Pogoje za  prehode urejajo Merila za prehode med študijskimi programi), adopted by the NAKVIS.

 

Employability

The study programme reflects the employment needs of non-economic sector, since it (primarily) educates for the profession of Primary school Teacher.

The need for the programme of 2nd Cycle is evident from the “Act on organisation and financing of education”, as it stipulates that primary school teachers are required to have 2nd Cycle education.

Graduates may continue their studies on the 3rd Cycle, or they may go on with studies on the 2nd Cycle, which enter into details of certain specificities within the profession (for example UP PEF study programme of Inclusive Pedagogics).
