The basic aims of the programme

The aims of the first cycle study programme Educational Sciences are to train the professional of a basic profile for certain areas of education, from general acquaintance with phenomena and processes of the entire field of education to being qualified for engagement in the education process, planning and providing individual support to vulnerable and different children, organizing various forms of education and training in and parallel to work, and in various forms and in various ages of life taking care of professional development as well as for research and innovation. This should allow the graduates either to enter the labour market or to continue their education. To provide the graduates with a broader orientation and a basis for further, more profound study, the study programme also contains basic courses in the fields of culture and society such as: basic pedagogics and development of education, sociology of education, anthropology, themes from psychology as well as basics of anatomy and physiology, through which graduates will get to know the basic structure and operation of the human body and deviations or irregularities in its functioning. Taking the importance of communication, cooperation and various partner roles into account, the aim of the study programme is also a basic insight into the areas that involve this kind of basic knowledge and skills as well as a capability of positively evaluating and accepting differences. The graduates get acquainted with the area of cooperative or team work and with the basics of lifelong learning. 

As the aim of the programme is a broad profile of the graduates for a broad field of education, the graduates also attain basic competences in the fields of social work and supporting forms of work with children and adolescents with special educational needs or with different children and adolescents.


General competences attained in the programme

Stated bellow are only some of the basic, general or generic competences of professionals. More into detail the basic and specific competences are stated in individual course syllabi.

The graduate:

  • Learns the basics of effective communication with learners and the basics of developing favourable climate in relations with the learners and among them;
  • Learns the basics of adequate communication with co-workers and with other employees in the education institution (team work);
  • Can organize a relation of partnership and cooperation between different subjects taking part in the education process, further education and career development of an individual (experts, expert institutions, consumers and parents);
  • Has basic knowledge about persons with deficits, obstacles or impairments and can organize the conditions and the support  needed by such individuals in the education process and in social life;
  • Is proficient in the basic principles and procedures of planning, performing and evaluating the learning process;
  • Through aligning the factors in the learning process sets up an efficient learning environment;
  • Appropriately engages information and communication technology in the work and develops information literacy in participants;
  • Masters the basics of research work;
  • Understands and analyses the current social and cultural phenomena as well as the phenomena in the historical context;
  • Receives feedback and suggestions from her or his professional environment and for lifelong learning.


Subject specific competences attained in the programme

The graduate:

Course Syllabus:

Access requirements:

Year 1 of the study programme Educational Sciences can be accessed by those

a)     who have passed the matura,

b)    who have passed the vocational matura in any of the secondary programmes and the exam in one of the matura subjects (e.g. philosophy, geography, music, theory of arts, psychology, sociology, modern dance, theory and history of drama and theatre, history of arts, history); the selected subject can not be the same as one of the subjects passed in the framework of the  professional matura;

c)     who have finished any four-year secondary programme before 1 June 1995.


In case of enrolment limitation the candidates under a) and c) are selected according to

  • overall performance in the matura  or  final exam respectively: 70 % of points awarded;
  • overall performance in secondary grades 3 and 4: 30 % of points awarded.

Candidates under b) above are selected according to:

  • overall performance in the vocational matura: 40 % of points awarded;
  • the performance in the selected matura subject: 30 % of points awarded;
  • overall performance in secondary grades 3 and 4: 30 % of points awarded.


Promotion to next grade:

To be promoted to the second grade of the first cycle study programme Educational Sciences, the student must accumulate 54 CP (90 % CP) of the 60 CP in the first grade of the study programme. In exceptional cases enrolment to the second grade can be granted with 48 CP accumulated, based on a substantiated request addressed to the Commission for Study Affairs of the Senate of the UP PEF. The remaining requirements must be satisfied before enrolment into the third grade.

In addition to all requirements from the first grade, 54 CP of the 60 CP of the second grade of the study programme are required for enrolment into the third grade. In exceptional cases enrolment to the third grade  can be granted with 48 CP from the second grade accumulated, based on a substantiated request addressed to  the Commission for Study Affairs of the Senate of the UP PEF.  The remaining requirements must be satisfied before defending the final thesis.

A study year can be repeated in case the student has accumulated at least half, i.e. 30 of the CP in the study year enrolled to. The Commission for Study Affairs of the Senate of the UP PEF can also grant repeating a study year to a student who from justified reasons has accumulated less than the required number of CP.

Students can take courses in more than one study programmes (parallel education) in UP PEF or in other higher education institution provided in the knowledge tests in the study programme enrolled to they have attained the average grade of at least 8.0.

Students can progress faster and conclude their studies in a shorter amount of time than defined by the study programme. The Senate of the UP PEF shall define requirements for faster progression and parallel study.  

Student status can be extended in accordance with the provisions of the Statute of the University of Primorska. 


Concluding the studies:

Students conclude their studies when they have completed all the requirements determined by the study programme and when they have prepared and successfully defended their graduation thesis.


Enrolment according to criteria for transfer:

General conditions for transfers are provided in the Criteria for Transfers between study programmes, determined by the Council of The Republic of Slovenia for Higher Education. Treated as transfer between study programmes is giving up education in a study programme enrolled into by a student and continuing education in a new programme when part of the study requirements or all the requirements the student has satisfied in the first programme are recognized as satisfied in the second programme.


The following criteria apply in case of transfer between programmes:

  • meeting the requirements for enrolment into the new study programme;
  • the number of study places available;
  • the number of study years or semesters in the previous study programme for which the student has satisfied all the requirements and can be recognized partly or as a whole;
  • minimum number of years or semesters a student must have completed to be allowed to graduate in the new programme.

Transfer between study programmes is possible in case of transfer between study programmes leading to equal level of education (between study programmes leading to the acquisition of higher education professional degree).

Individual applications for transfers are dealt with by the Senate of the Faculty of Education, of the University of Primorska, which in determining any additional study requirements takes into account previously completed candidates’ study programme.

  • Transfer from academic study programmes and from higher education professional programmes. The students in first cycle study programmes of the UP PEF and in other similar first cycle academic study programmes in the fields of humanities and social sciences who meet the criteria for the enrolment into the study programme Educational Sciences are notified of the missing requirements they have to satisfy if desiring to graduate in the programme.

    The students in the first cycle higher education professional study programmes from the fields of preschool pedagogics who meet the criteria for the enrolment into first cycle academic study programmes can on the basis of evidence submitted be granted transfer into the corresponding year of the university programmes of the UP PEF. The missing requirements they have to satisfy if desiring to graduate in the new programme get determined. 
  • Enrolment of candidates who have concluded the higher education programme adopted before 1 January 1994

    The graduates from higher education programmes in similar study fields adopted before 1 January 1994 can be enrolled into year 3. The missing requirements they must satisfy if they wish to graduate in the programme Educational Sciences will be defined by the Senate of the UP PEF.

    Requests for enrolment according to criteria for transfer shall be addressed to the Commission for Study Affairs of the Senate of the UP PEF. The requests will be treated in conformance with the national laws on higher education and the Statute of the University of Primorska.  

Graduate student employability

  • In organizing and performing individual and group learning support to students in primary school (article 81 of the ZOFVI – Act on Organizing and Financing Education);
  • In performing various forms of educational and socially integrative, preventive, compensational and correction programmes (Article 14 of the Special Needs Act);
  • In various forms of work with parents and development of new forms of involvement of parents in school;
  • As co-worker in providing additional professional support and assistance to children with special needs;
  • As organizer of educational staff training;
  • As organizer of in-service training;
  • As support and assistant in counselling, employment planning, career development planning and changes of qualification;
  • As organizer of education in clubs and associations;
  • As organizer of adult education;
  • As organizer of extracurricular activities and practical training;
  • As organizer of practice on the job;
  • As animator in tourism.
