About the programme

Programme basic objectives

To enable students to:

  • acquire new knowledge through an authentic research into the pedagogical practice;
  • research problems that are directly linked with professional interests of individuals or educational institutions;
  • develop innovativeness, creativity and criticism in solving theoretical and practical as well as in searching for solutions of their pedagogical;
  • have an in-depth understanding of theoretical and methodological concepts as well as being qualified for independent development of new knowledge and for solving the most demanding problems by way of verifying and improving as well as by improving the already known ones;
  • discover new solutions and make them to be competent for:
  • managing more requiring scientific and research projects in the educational area; developing a cooperative professional learning;
  • respecting professional ethics.

 General competences gained by the programme

After the completed study requirements of the study programme and after the successful defence of doctoral dissertation students obtain:

  • the ability of independent acquisition of new knowledge and the research of educational phenomena as well as the presentation of results to the critical public;
  • the ability of establishing conditions, processes and responsibility to lifelong learning through one’s own experience and within cohesive communities;
  • the ability of cooperation and the capability of leading and guiding the team and independent work;
  • the ability of critical understanding of the concepts of scientific platform as well as contemporary achievements, which guide doctorate students towards the analysis and solutions of educational challenges and problems;
  • the ability of communication and adequate use of communication sources (verbal in non-verbal) as well as the use of modern technology;
  • the ability of understanding and maintaining tolerance, ethics of professional work as well as scientific research work and tolerance with intercultural respect;
  • the ability of critical understanding of scientific platforms of educational policies and intercultural strategies as well as the contemporary achievements, which guide doctorate students to the analysis and solutions of educational challenges and problems in a direct intercultural environment.

 Subject specificities gained by the programme

  • development and application of research approach for the acquisition of new knowledge;
  • development of capacities for critical judgment of data and making their sense;
  • considering ethics and responsibilities while solving conflict situations in a concrete educational practice and in the research work;
  • taking into account the professional and personal traits of all involved in the research work;
  • developing critical and reflexive attitude towards the process and the research results;
  • the ability of communicating and adequate application of communication sources;
  • ability to do research into the factors of hidden curriculum and implicit theories about childhood and education of children;
  • recognition of education involvement in wider social processes;
  • the ability of establishing conditions and processes which guide direct practice towards raising of quality and professional development;
  • qualification and training for the application of specific methods in the analysis of educational and disciplinary problems, in taking educational measures and in  determining educational effects;
  • the ability of observation, study, description and presentation of domestic or foreign linguistic and intercultural activities in the social interaction, with simultaneous direction of linguistic position, spoken and written genres, expert contents;
  • the ability of establishing criteria for the evaluation of democratic coexistence of people in their diversity, forming ones’ own criteria and relationship to others and different;
  • the ability of cooperation as well as leading and guiding team work;
  • the ability of establishing circumstances, developing processes and responsibility to lifelong learning;
  • other subject-specific competences, connected with individual subjects.

 Curriculum 

Study programme of the 3rd Cycle Educational Sciences is conceived as a three year doctoral study. For a successful completion students have to collect 180 CP (ECTS). Students can collect in each year of their studies up to 60 CP.

Access requirements:

The following candidates can enter The Doctoral Study Programme of Educational Sciences at the University of Primorska, Faculty of Education:

  • who finished 2nd cycle study programmes,
  • who finished under-graduate university study programmes (study programme adopted before 11 June 2004),
  • who finished study programmes from the fourth paragraph of the Article 36 of the Law on Higher Education, evaluated with 300 credit points.

In case of limited entry the following criteria is considered:

  • Average examination grade of previous studies (60 %),
  • Grade of the final work from the previous studies (40 %).

Enrolment into year two of doctoral study according to criteria for transfer

Directly into year two of the doctoral study the candidates can enrol who

a)       Have completed an (academic) scientific master study programme (programme for attaining the Master of Science title) adopted before 11 June 2004 in the fields of social sciences and humanities, whereby 60 credit points (ECTS) get recognized as the study requirements satisfied within the doctoral study programme.

b)       Have completed the (academic) scientific master study programme (programme for attaining the Master of Science title) adopted before 11 June 2004 in another field, whereby up to 60 credit points (ECTS) get recognized as the study requirements satisfied within the doctoral study programme, yet in the framework of the doctoral study programme the candidate must pass the first year compulsory subject  Contemporary recognitions of educational sciences.

The Commission for Study Affairs of the Senate of the UP PEF decides on the exact amount of study requirements satisfied expressed in the number of credit points under b)  based on the documentation the candidate has submitted at registering for enrolment.

 Conditions for progressing in the programme and concluding the studies

To progress into year two of the third cycle study programme Early Learning the candidate must have accumulated at least 48 CP (80 %) of the 60 CP in the first year of the study programme. In exceptional cases, based on a substantiated request by the candidate, addressed to the Commission for Study Affairs of the UP PEF, progressing to year two can also be granted with 36 CP accumulated. The remaining requirements must be satisfied before enrolling into year three.  

The conditions for enrolment into year three are all the study requirements of year one satisfied, at least 48 CP (80 %) of the 60 CP in the second year of the study programme accumulated, and the theme of doctoral dissertation approved.  In exceptional cases, based on a substantiated request by the candidate, addressed to the Commission for Study Affairs of the UP PEF, progressing to year three can also be granted with 36 CP accumulated. All the remaining requirements must be satisfied before defending the doctoral dissertation.

The student can enrol the same year again if she or he has accumulated at least 24 CP of this year.

 

Transfer entry criteria:

General transfer requirements are provided by the “Measures for Transfers among Study Programmes”, passed by the Council of the Republic of Slovenia for Higher Education. We speak of transfer among study programmes when a student stops his studies in the programmes that he had entered and continues his studies in a new study programme, for which a part of the accomplished studying requirement or all the accomplished obligations of the previous study programme are recognised as completed.

 For transfers among programmes the following rules are applicable:

  • complying with the conditions for entry into new study programme,
  • the number of available study places,
  • year or semester of previous study programme for which a student has accomplished all the studying obligations and can be recognised partly or entirely.

 Transfer among study programmes is allowed when the transfer takes place between study programmes providing the same levels of education, i.e., among study programmes of the 3rd cycle.

Individual applications for transfers are examined by the competent commissions of the Senate of the Faculty of Education at the University of Primorska, which takes into account, when deciding on possible additional study requirements, the candidates previous studies accomplished requirements.

 Employability 

The study programme provides an in depth understanding of theoretical and methodological concepts as well as the qualification for independent development of new knowledge from the field of education, for solving complex problems in educational practice as well as for the introduction of novelties into the educational practice with their evaluation and improvements. The PhD students’ profile is broad and inter-disciplinarian which is subject to multi-dimensionality and complexity of pedagogical area. Doctors and Doctresses, who successfully complete their studying programme, acquire broad, inter-disciplinarian knowledge of social sciences, knowledge from educational area and are qualified for scientific and research work.  

Doctoral study programme has been conceived in the way that the PhD graduates are well qualified for the implementation of their professional knowledge in practice, and particularly for the analysis of complex situations and problems, which they will be able to approach holistically, thoroughly and creatively.
