The project focuses on improving the functioning of hospital schools in Slovenia and expanding their services for children and adolescents who are
unable to attend school regularly due to health problems. The project aims to improve the overall support for these individuals, especially those with
life-threatening illnesses, and to enable their inclusion in the educational process, either during or after their treatment. The project focuses on the
design and feasibility of implementing individualised gradual integration plans, tailored to the needs and condition of the children or adolescents, in
order to maintain their educational progress and social inclusion in spite of health barriers. The project also includes the development of new
teaching methods and programmes to better integrate hospital schools into the school system, and the creation of support content for
professionals in hospital and parent schools and for families. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing and expanding psychosocial support
for children facing health problems and their families, as these children and adolescents are often exposed to major emotional and social challenges
that can affect their well-being and social integration. The introduction of new methods, such as virtual classrooms and hybrid learning, would make
it easier to maintain contact with the school of origin and the associated social ties even during the period of treatment, thus facilitating the
transition of children back to the school environment of origin. The project will include a thorough analysis of existing hospital school practices in
Slovenia, a comparison of these practices with international models and research into examples of good practice abroad. Based on the findings,
expert proposals will be developed to improve the hospital school system in Slovenia, including proposed normative changes to adapt hospital
education to the needs of children and adolescents. The project will also explore new approaches, such as cooperation between hospitals and home
schools and the involvement of mentors and peer companions, to facilitate the process of reintegration of children into the school environment. The
project will not only improve access to education for children with long-term illnesses, but will also contribute to reducing their social exclusion and
stigmatisation. By disseminating findings on the Slovenian hospital school system in an international context, the project will strengthen cooperation
between Slovenian and international experts. The aim is that the impact of the project will be sustainable and contribute to reducing the social
exclusion of these children, increasing their educational opportunities and enabling them to successfully enter the labour market and thus lead an
independent and quality life.
